Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

I have a spare unit. I really think about getting yet another lens and thread prolongation to try it over with the image sensor more carefully. I am pretty sure I messed up 😅 Your max zoomed out image without colour boarders yet, does it have image boarders or is it somewhat center? I don't...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

I hardware modded a Type D. Balto1986 and me made the observation that now the max zoom out still is too far in, resulting in a crop. I scaled Deano's 7mm to 8mm and 9mm spacers but it won't get sharp on the D hardware, it's too far out already. A thing to remember I struggled to put in the...

No, the metal flap has no window. Is that in both directions zoom in and out? Or just one? Mine zooms in both directions (in and out) and at some stage just does an awkward crop instead of changing zoom. Maybe the second to last click.. I have a Model D too.

Congratulation very nice! I am not an expert. I just scanned some relatives reels and some Italian Stag. I would say your film strip is uncommon and special.

Thank you, I shall try =) Worst thing that can happen is that I end up with multiple units. I now ordered one to have one for sure and continue working on thicker spacers for the D model (as Balto1986 already discussed the full zoom out still crops at the D).

No, I don't think so. I can leave it off for a day and it still won't restart. But thank you for the suggestion! =) I now cleaned all ribbon cables and sockets, but the problem remains. I was able to turn the unit on without the camera module attached once now while testing. But shutting the...

Indeed, just after the hardware mod. The firmware ran fine =) Thank you very much for the tips, I will work through them and disassemble and clean the whole unit thoroughly! :D

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

The problem first appeared while running a melw Type D firmware and since then I reflashed to a more current melw firmware. I have not flashed back to a stock firmware in regards to this problem (I did before for other reasons sometimes). I reformatted the SD card several times and the device...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

I have something new to report: As a reminder: My unit, type D, custom melw firmware turned black and unresponsive. Just able to turn on/off but nothing else. Pretty sure it's not the firmware's fault. Apparently the capacitor drain takes very long on my type D. More then a week. I left the...

If you don't get such a photo, I recommend scrolling to the photos here. I know one user moved the socket from the back to the front and that post might include the needed infos.

That's a very good point. Let rephrase it to "maximum usable resolution, given the current boundaries" :D

I have that issue too, but I accepted it, because it's part of the secret sauce. Being zoomed out fully makes it such that you use the full sensor surface for the scanner and such that you have the best possible resolution for the setup. But yes, depending on what you scan, it's sad that the...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Mine is in more. One image out of focus, sorry. What I did: remove the new lens and lock ring. Take the prolongation and the original female socket. Take grip gloves. I really don't know the English word. They would translate to Farmer's Gloves if I apply my mother tongue here. And then force...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Meanwhile once it started again, after resting for multiple days. This is awesome, and makes me way less concerned. My type D is unable to quickly drain it's capacitors it seems. Being not connected to power for a few hours and pressing in the power button for 30 s doesn't seem to drain it on...
