    Quadra Quandary Quibbles

The PCB under U26/27 looks really sus, like the surface of the board has been scraped away and exposed the layer underneath. Seems like someone had the board before you and had a botched repair go at it.

    Macintosh LC III Bodge-Laden PCB

Did a bit of research. The D66C mask revision of the 68030FE25B is made on the 1 um (1000 nm) lithography node in Sendai, JP. It's the last mask version of the B rev 68030 and the smallest. The older mask revisions were either 1.2 um or 1.35 um. I'd sure hate to see how hot those parts ran if...

    Macintosh LC III Bodge-Laden PCB

The jumper block on the G3 does a lot more than just change the CPU clock. The only change on the LC III involves moving a SMD resistor from the top of the board to the bottom. http://www.applefool.com/clockchipping/lciii.html If your CPU is getting too hot or is unstable, you can just revert...

    Macintosh LC III Bodge-Laden PCB

If you want a bit of extra performance, there are a few passives you can move around to change the board to LCIII+ spec and run the CPU/FPU at 33 MHz. You'll probably need a heatsink though. I just replaced the Motorola part with a much later Freescale part that runs a whole lot cooler on mine.

    Quadra Quandary Quibbles

You have corroded traces going to the VIAs in the unpopulated ROM slot between the VRAM slots and the soldered RAM. There also look to be solder bridges on U26 and U27 on the bottom of the board. Also, don't use IPA to clean boards, it's garbage and doesn't work. Use CRC Lectra Clean or QD...

    Performa 6360 added

I'm not saying to move the fan, just use a thinner fan. I think the stock fan is 20 or 25mm thick. You can get 15mm fans fairly easily, and there are also some super slim ones down to 11mm like this: https://akasa.co.uk/search.php?seed=AK-FN076 I don't remember if the 6360 uses a 80 or 92mm...

    Performa 6360 added

The cards I was trying definitely weren't full height. I think I had a low profile NIC and an Adaptec 50 pin SCSI card that was mediumish profile and barely fit. I forgot the size of the fan, but I wonder if using a slim fan to replace the fat fan would give enough room for a full height card.

    Planning my SE/30 Reloaded build

Unless you plan on using the machine for testing, I'd avoid using the PLCC sockets, except for the ROMs. It's just one additional point of potential failure, especially if you're using chips harvested from a bombed board Unless the legs on those ICs are perfect, you're likely to have connection...

Asante Technologies 09-00061-00 Ethernet NuBus card Rev A

I have the same Ethernet card in my Performa 600. Recently did the mod on my card, which is one cut trace and a jumper wire. I no longer need my $400 managed switch and a crossover cable to make the card work. It works on all of my switches, even the gigabit ones.

    Performa 6360 added

It's been a long time since I put a dual slot riser in my 6360, but I remember it colliding with the frame where the TV tuner board sits. I remember being able to make it work, as long as the upper card didn't need any external connections, if the metal frame was removed. This limits its...

    Performa 6360 added

I think you'll enjoy the 6360 far more than the 6200CD you had decades ago. The 6200CD was a turd of a design, Apple basically took the Quadra 630 and removed the 68040 and jimmy rigged a 603 CPU on it. It was a 64 bit bus CPU on a 32 bit bus at half the CPU speed, and it had a bunch of...

Here's a picture with labels to make it easier.

Performa 600 Cache Mod, IIvx pictures needed.

Success! It was R146. Removing it enabled the cache. But then it caused another issue, the Mac wouldn't boot without bombing with a bus error. I looked at the cache chips again and one of the TAG SRAMs had two pins with bad solder joints. I redid those and the cache now works. SOJ chips always...

Performa 600 Cache Mod, IIvx pictures needed.

Rather unfortunate, the archive containing the enablers appears to be corrupt. When trying to extract, it only extracts the system enabler for the TAM and nothing else.

Performa 600 Cache Mod, IIvx pictures needed.

Good find. I'll try moving it off one of the pads to take it out of circuit either later tonight or tomorrow and see if anything changes. Might also go on a side quest and probe R129/R130 and see if that's related to some sort of high speed clock signal.

MacTest Pro shows: Macintosh (ID = 45) Macintosh IIvm Performa 600 I'm guessing that I can't use something like "I wish I were" to smurf the Gestalt ID.

Thanks for the quick response! It looks like my guesses were 99% correct for the resistor strapping based on the grainy picture from before. The only resistor I seem to have gotten wrong is R123. I put a 1k, where it should have been 100R. I corrected that, but I'm still not seeing any...

Performa 600 Cache Mod, IIvx pictures needed.

I'm finally getting around to adding motherboard L2 cache to my Performa 600, as I found all of the required cache chips (SRAMs and TAG SRAMs) for a reasonable cost from a nearby surplus store. The cache chips installed with no major issues, but they don't work, and I'm fairly sure it's...

Fixing 10base-T on more ethernet cards

I wish I would have found this thread earlier yesterday. I spent the better part of a day trying to get an Asante MCiNB working on one of my machines. Ended up having to get out a $400 managed switch and make a crossover cable to get the card to work. Only to find you just need to cut a single...

    SE/30 no video, death chime

SE/30 requires four SIMMs for the 32 bit 68030 bus. I think you can put them in either the four upper or four lower slots. Instead of firing the blunderbuss with parts, you should start checking the traces. If you're getting a bus error, there's probably broken traces or VIAs somewhere.
