    Apple Lisa 3d Case Project

It's not your fault, it's almost certainly a side-effect of one of Alex's changes to the main LisaFPGA code. His change revealed a bug in the Selector (the program that boots and gives you the hard drive image menu) that is almost impossibly unlikely to occur in a real Lisa, but that easily...

    VCFMW 2026 Should Be Sweet!

Come to RetroFest in Swindon next June. It's not the size of a modern-day VCF, and it lacks talks (which I regret), but it's a bunch of folks showing their retro machines and projects. Has been going for several years. I'm guessing it's a lot like what VCF was like in years past.

Slightly odd Mac Classic hard drive and BlueSCSI

Cross-posting a follow-up from me on 68kmla: Last night I succumbed to temptation and asked a robot about this situation. It too picked up on the TS partition map [note: a 68kmla commenter had pointed out the fact that the disk is using an older style of partition map], which, although not a...

Slightly odd Mac Classic hard drive and BlueSCSI

(Crossposting from 68kmla as the BlueSCSI website advises coming here) I have a puzzling BlueSCSI situation on my long-suffering Mac Classic. The Classic works, the original HDD works, and the BlueSCSI works, but the BlueSCSI will not boot from an image of the hard drive. The Classic: An...

    Apple Lisa 3d Case Project

I've now tried the games on a real Lisa 2/10 and observe identical behaviour. ETA: I had a hypothesis that switching to "square pixel" mode would fix LodeRunner. It did not. I am barely competent to complete the first level of LodeRunner and so this data gathering has been somewhat slow!

    Apple Lisa 3d Case Project

(All experiments below are carried out on a LisaFPGA run at the ordinary Lisa CPU speed.) When I try to run Asteroids, a dialog says that the application unexpectedly quit, the screen gets corrupted (desktop goes black but window refreshes work), and the mouse disappears. I'm able to get past...

    Apple Lisa 3d Case Project

I don't know about the games, but it's no surprise to be missing sound: the stock Lisa never had sound hardware like the Mac does, and to get sampled audio out of the machine requires either a special expansion card or considerable effort in software..

Mac Classic making loud sizzling/frying noise & random reboots

I've been there in the other direction. The flat's main breaker tripped before too many components got blown out.

Starting tech meetups in your own area

The New Ken museum is one of the best computer museums there is, I think; it has an amazing collection, and I visit whenever I am anywhere nearby. You are lucky to live so close! There is not a lot of Mac stuff in particular; a couple Macs and Lisas in the micros collection. The most impressive...

Starting tech meetups in your own area

You know about the museum in New Kensington, right? I lived in Pittsburgh during the G20 (which was 2009, so a little while back...). All the buses set up their signs to alternate between their route number/destination board and "PITTSBURGH WELCOMES THE WORLD". I got a chuckle at seeing an...

Hardware/software you have that no one talks about.

Nothing in a hurry :) For all of its quirks (and if you overlook its slowness) it is a pretty straightforward BSD 4.3 workstation with a graphical windowing environment (not X though; it's its own thing). It has an AUI ethernet port on the back and will speak TCP/IP, so during COVID...

Hardware/software you have that no one talks about.

Not many people talk about the Whitechapel MG-1 workstation, or about the NS32016 CPU that powered it. That's probably one of the more obscure items in my collection. Whitechapel stuff isn't even on Bitsavers despite some very low-effort lobbying to get it there.

Contact the WOZ? Apple affiliated members? Woz.org folks? re: SWIM Release

Well, there aren't many cases where I'd be more delighted to be wrong. I wish you the best of luck.

Contact the WOZ? Apple affiliated members? Woz.org folks? re: SWIM Release

I also wanna muse for a bit on this idea that Woz might be motivated to do this out of interest in his legacy. Steve Wozniak co-founded Apple, occasionally the most valuable company on Earth and one whose outsize public goodwill trades on (among other things) the legend of his beaming avuncular...

Contact the WOZ? Apple affiliated members? Woz.org folks? re: SWIM Release

I expect Woz doesn't retain the IP rights for the original Disk II controller; Woz didn't design the IWM, Wendell Sander and/or Bob Bailey did (also); and he didn't design the SWIM either, that seems to have been Wendell's son Brian.

    Weird Lisa CRT reverse pincushioning

+1 --- I've never seen anything like this before. The raster itself looks fairly linear (so not pincushioning or similar distortion) but the picture (or the part of it we can see) is bigger than it should be, almost "zoomed in". Meanwhile the extreme "vignetting" almost looks like a shadow ---...

Can you get AAUI sockets anywhere?

Back in the day, it reminded my friends and me of Cardassian interior decor on DS9: similiar colours and curves

Can you get AAUI sockets anywhere?

The AAUI receptacles I was looking for are 3M MDR (Mini Delta Ribbon) connectors, and they are still available on DigiKey etc. I used them to design a much nicer adapter than the hack shown above. Works for me!
