    Any interest in Palm Pilots?

https://www.theregister.com/2024/04/11/pumpkin_os_foss_palmos/ This details some amazing modern open source attempts to resurrect the os...like Wine/ReactOS (Windows) or AROS (Amiga).

68k Source code available online for Megaroids ][?

Because the source code was available, someone gave a challenge to port Arashi to run on B&W machines like the SE/30. I took the challenge since I had a Mac Classic II (actually slower than an SE/30): https://macintoshgarden.org/games/arashi...

    Spectre GCR question

That is most likely true, since my Amiga with AMax can do that. AMax/Specte emulates the scsi manager and scsi is scsi...a Linux box that includes HFS filesystem can read a Mac SCSI drive. I can boot my Amiga (emulating a MacPlus with AMax) off the same Mac zip disk I use on real Macs.

    No. 😝

Introductory price US$6,269 (equivalent to $15,400 in 2023) A steal! (No wonder I couldn't afford a Mac back in the '80's/'90's)

    Any interest in Palm Pilots?

I kept one in my pocket until the age of cell phones! I have a bunch I picked up at GoodWill, and had dug one of them out earlier this year to play bejeweled, shanghai and solitaire on. Used to love writing code to run on different platforms (I used my own extremely funky framework), and it...

Advice for mono cassette recorder restoration?

Hey, completely unrelated, but your signature mentions you have an accelerated Mac SE. I ported a game just for machines like that and was wondering if you'd be willing to test it. I'm 99% sure it'll run: https://macintoshgarden.org/games/arashi Grab "arashi_110_bw.img" and look in "arashi...

Advice for mono cassette recorder restoration?

Dang! I was REALLY hoping a rubber band would help more. I've had a lot of luck with them in the past. It's possible a different size will work better...but I'm having my doubts. One reason it'd play slower may be the rubber band is too tight...but I'm really only guessing...you might as well...

Advice for mono cassette recorder restoration?

Isn't that a screw on top of the capstan bracket? I'm hoping so. It looks like it might not let you remove the capstan or the bracket, but might allow a gap to slip the belt off. If not, chances are the bracket'd need to be removed to get it out...and that'd probably need semi-major...

Advice for mono cassette recorder restoration?

You can definitely spin things while it is off (and play engaged) with your fingers, but, unless you know what should and shouldn't be moving, and how, it won't tell you TOO much. That said, you can definitely try and reproduce what the motor does while running, ie make it "go through the...

Advice for mono cassette recorder restoration?

I've seen things like sw1 on tape recorders. It usually is what is used to switch between playback and record modes, hence it needs to swap several parts of the circuit around. If that's what it is, you'll want to be sure the switch gets in just the right place when you put the board back...

Advice for mono cassette recorder restoration?

The capstan is the large metal wheel, which has a tiny almost always pointy axel. They are "precision engineered", at least compared to the rest of the mechanics, to ensure smooth regulated speed. The pinch roller and heads move forwards on playback. The roller presses against the capstan...

Advice for mono cassette recorder restoration?

Yes, if you pull roller back from the capstan, it should continue playing, but the speed will be unregulated. It will be faster than normal, and wobbly. It has to be faster as it is taking up the tape, but not TOO fast or it'd put too much tension on the tape. It isn't a perfect test, because...

Advice for mono cassette recorder restoration?

In my experience most issues are mechanical, since the electronics are analog, very simple, and were well made back in the day: Clean pinch roller. Junk on it can cause it to not grab well enough. Rubber on roller can also deteriorate. (I've even seen melted ones). Capstan pulley belt almost...

    IIgs RAM Upgrade help needed!

Dang. That's no good, no good at all. I'd say test the card in another IIgs, but the card might be bad. Have you checked the slot and made sure there's no bent pins? It's also possible the power supply might be right on the edge and supplying just enough current for the card is too much.

    IIgs RAM Upgrade help needed!

I have a rom 01 machine with a gglabs card and a microdrive/turbo with a cfcard. You don't have any other devices than the GW4201D and the floppy attached? What does the screen display?

Interest in a System 6/7 version of Attack of the Petscii robots?

Huge progress. Game now starts, but not playable (keypresses not fully handled), colors not right (256 color palette needs coding). CodeWarrior 6 and 7, and XCode 2. M68k, PPC and MacOS X Carbon. https://macintoshgarden.org/forum/the-petscii-robot-challenge?page=2#comment-101409 Source is...

Interest in a System 6/7 version of Attack of the Petscii robots?

Anyone willing/able to help is MORE than welcome! First step'd be cloning the repo and trying a build in XCode on Tiger. I've got something really stupid going on with pointers vs handles to GWorlds/CGrafPorts/Windows right now, so don't expect it to work, and you'll NEED to force quit it, as...

Interest in a System 6/7 version of Attack of the Petscii robots?

I'm starting with a Carbon version, using CodeWarrior 6 pro and XCode 2 on Tiger. This is so I can use decent debuggers and be able to force quit it without taking the system down until I get to a stable point. Once there, I'll work my way backwards from there to classic PPC and M68k on MacOS...

Urgent help needed for my Powerbook 170!!!

No worries! That's the joy of working on old machines...you can take your time...they aren't going anywhere! A while back I'd bought a box of 6 mixed 170's and 180's, evidently from an old Mac repair shop. They were all marked DEAD, but by swapping parts around, and using a drive from a dead...
